Constellation Energy CEO Mayo Shattuck Supports Climate Change Bill
In a released statement, Constellation Energy Group’s (CEG) president and CEO Mayo Shattuck expressed support for the Waxman-Markey legislation, better known as the climate change bill. Mayo Shattuck acknowledged the landmark nature of the bill and described climate change as one of the most important issues of our time. Commenting on the provisions of the bill, Shattuck expressed that it is a thoughtful blueprint in achieving America’s long-term goal of reducing GHG emissions.
CEG is America’s largest wholesale supplier of energy. A top producer of natural gas, it possesses one of the largest fleet of power plants and facilities in the power generation sector including a nuclear power plant facility.
Mayo Shattuck feels that the bill includes important steps to cutting GHG emissions by putting an emissions cap and distribution permits. He recognizes that while renewable, nuclear-based technologies already exist, there is a need to promote these technologies at a more rapid and wider scale.
From CEG’s perspective, the effort to reduce GHG emissions defies simple solutions. Therefore, it should involve long-term strategies and steadfast commitment from consumers, industries, and policymakers. The firm proposes a climate change program that offers a market-based approach; capable of linking other global efforts; has clearcut regulation policies, and can be applied on an economy-wide scale.
